The Black Mystic
"A Villian For a New Era"
A song on their lips and art in their heart, Francis "The Black Mystic" Blalock has been on the artist's path since about the age of ten. Growing up as the youngest in a family of music lovers, artists, and intellectuals, Francis attributes their eclectic style to the diverse sounds and sights of their childhood. Whether watching Daft Punk's discovery video, listening to Wu-Tang Clans "36 Chambers", or singing in school choir, Francis recalls being constantly connected to music and art. Being introduced to photography later at summer camp only solidified Francis' love for the arts, learning the ins-and-outs of working with film and photographic composition.
Oozing retro-futuristic vibes, villain imagery, and sci-fi aesthetic, both Matthew's music and photography invoke the nostalgia of an adventurous and storied past filled with emotion. With the use of sounds of real life and experiences in music and using unique color grading and textures in photography and video, Francis is able to achieve a captivating and connective experience through multiple media mediums.
20 years later, Francis' accomplishments include being a multi-instrumentalist that has played shows with several bands around NYC, Co-managing a recording studio working with several up-and-coming musicians on their recording needs, working as a freelance portrait and nature photographer, stylist consultant and commercial videographer.
Currently, Francis is working on their own personally fronted music project, and Running a holistic recording studio Starlight Studio in Brooklyn, NY.
